Womb cancer link to diet, exercise and possibly coffee

Coffee contains antioxidants which may boost health

Posted by Neill Abayon

The risk of womb cancer can be reduced by exercise, diet and possibly drinking coffee, research suggests.

Almost half of cases of womb cancer in the UK - about 3,700 a year - could be prevented through keeping slim and active, a review of data shows.

Researchers at Imperial College, London, say women can reduce their risk with at least 30 minutes of daily exercise and keeping a healthy weight.

The World Cancer Research Fund report also found that coffee may reduce risk.

But experts say there is not yet enough evidence to recommend drinking coffee to protect against the disease.

Endometrial cancer - cancer of the womb lining - is the fourth most common of all cancers in women in the UK.
In the first global analysis since 2007, Imperial College London researchers collated and reviewed scientific research on endometrial cancer, and links with diet, physical activity and body weight.

The study found evidence that about 3,700 cases could be prevented every year if women were active for 38 minutes a day and maintained a healthy body weight.

MedicareBob Confirms His Medicare Shield Endorsement

Emailed to me by Rebecca Appleton

The president of Senior Healthcare Direct publicly endorses the Medicare Shield program
Robert Bache, the president of Senior Healthcare Direct, has announced his endorsement for Medicare Shield, a free service that helps Americans to protect their Medicare number from fraudulent claims.
With millions falling victim to the growing problem of Medicare fraud – thought to be one of the fastest growing frauds in the USA – Medicare Shield makes it easy to protect Medicare Claim Numbers against fraud, waste and abuse.

Bache, known as MedicareBob has publicly backed the Medicare Shield service. He has given his seal of approval to the scheme, which gives Medicare beneficiaries the ability to easily monitor all of the claims that are filed using their social security number or Medicare Claim Number. If a fraudulent claim appears, Medicare Shield makes it easy to report it.

Explaining his endorsement of the Medicare Shield program, Mr. Bache said, “Medicare fraud, waste, and abuse is a real problem for our Government, tax payers and Medicare beneficiaries. Medicare fraud may not feel real until it effects you, but what people need to understand is the Medicare Fraud actually affects every single tax payer! Billions of tax payer dollars every year are lost due to Medicare Fraud. In addition to the lost money, the emotional heartache that a senior experiences when they fall victim may have a bigger impact.”

Medicare fraud occurs when Medicare is billed for services or supplies the card holder never received. According to Medicare Shield, CMS approximated that in fiscal year 2010, Socialized medicine and government and state Medicaid agency programs made in excess of $65 billion in “poor federal payments,” specified as payments that need to not have actually been made or were made in an inaccurate quantity. Adding in poor payments made by state Medicaid programs adds another $10 billion yearly.

Medicare Shield and MedicareBob believe it is essential to reduce Medicare fraud in order to cut the cost for families, businesses, and the federal government. A reduction in fraudulent payments will also contribute to an increase in the quality of services offered to those who need care.

There are currently five key programs in place to cut down on Medicare fraud. Medicare Shield is one of these essential measures, helping Medicare beneficiaries to quickly review claims made against their account on a monthly basis, making it much more likely to that fraud, abuse and waste is quickly detected and promptly nipped in the bud. The service provides an online app for iPhone and iPad owners, which gives instant access to all Medicare claim information.

The other four measures in place include the Affordable Care Act, also known as the health care reform law, which has so far recovered $10 billion over the last three years. The Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action Team (HEAT) is a joint effort between the Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Justice. Illustrating just how important these programs are, the Administration has also made funding available for Senior Medicare Patrols, which help to fight Medicare Fraud through the use of senior citizen volunteers. Finally the Public-Private Partnership to Prevent Health Care Fraud employs resources and expertise from federal government, state officials, several leading private health insurance organizations and other anti-fraud groups.

5 Reasons to Eat More Celery

By Dr. Michael Murray

As far back as the 9th century B.C.E., celery leaves were used for medicinal properties. The use of celery as a food, however, took root in Europe in the 1700s.

Celery is one of those vegetables we tend to keep in the bottom of our vegetable drawer and only think about when it’s time to make soup, as it’s a basic ingredient for most soup broths. It’s a humble and often overlooked vegetable. However, there are good reasons to find ways to eat more of it. Here are 5 of them.

1. It’s high in nutrients and fiber, low in calories. Let me dispel a myth. Celery is not a net-zero-calorie food. Some people believe that the body burns more calories eating celery than the vegetable itself contains. Not true. However, one celery rib only contains 20 calories, and because it’s such an excellent source of fiber, it will make you feel full and cost few calories. For people who have the need to crunch and chew, but are trying to cut down on caloric foods, celery can’t be beat. Celery is also high in vitamin C, and contains potassium, folic acid, vitamins B6, B2, B1 and calcium as well.

2. It has phytochemicals that are protective against cancer. Celery contains phytochemical compounds called coumarins, which have been shown to help prevent cancer by enhancing the activity of white blood cells. Coumarin compounds in celery also aid the vascular system, and help ease migraines.

3. It can lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Celery contains 3-n-butylphthaline (3nb), a compound that has been found to lower blood pressure. In an animal study conducted at the National University of Singapore, a small amount of this compound lowered blood pressure by 12-14 percent and cholesterol by 7 percent. Humans can get the equivalent dose of this marvelous compound by eating just 4-6 ribs of celery.

Childhood obesity linked to high blood pressure in adulthood

Posted by Neill Abayon

Children who are obese or overweight are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure in adulthood, compared with children of a healthy weight, according to a study presented at the American Heart Association High Blood Pressure Research Scientific Sessions 2013.

Researchers analyzed the blood pressure and growth of 1,117 healthy adolescents over a 27-year period from 1986.

Of the participants, 68% were at a normal weight, 16% were overweight and 16% were obese.

At adulthood, 119 of the participants were diagnosed with high blood pressure. Of these, 6% were normal weight as children, 14% were overweight, while 26% were obese as children.

These results show that obesity during childhood may increase the risk of high blood pressure four-fold in adulthood, and children who are overweight may double their risk of high blood pressure as adults.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years.

Furthermore, in a CDC population-based sample of 5 to 17-year-olds, 70% of youths who were obese had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

However, a recent report from Medical News Today highlighted some positive statistics from the CDC, which showed that childhood obesity rates in the US decreased in 19 of 43 states and territories studied between 2008 and 2011.

Alcohol neither causes nor prevents depression

Posted by Neill Abayon

A new study does not support the belief that alcohol consumption causes depression - nor that it prevents it. This was the conclusion of clinical neuroscientists from the University of Western Australia (UWA).

They write about their findings in a paper published online recently in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

In their paper, the authors describe how research has linked alcohol use, particularly alcohol abuse and dependence, to raised risk for depression.

They also note that current practice for diagnosing depression implies the link is causal.

However, they say the evidence has come only from studies that are not designed to determine cause and where unexplored factors can interfere with the results, as Professor Osvaldo Almeida, lead author from UWA's School of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, explains:

"Even one of the diagnoses we have for depressive disorders - Substance Induced Mood Disorder - is a diagnosis where alcohol plays a role. However, because of the observational nature of the association between alcohol and depression, and the risk of confounding and bias that comes with observational studies, it is difficult to be entirely certain that the relationship is causal."

Dental cavities linked to lower risk of head and neck cancer

 Posted by Neill Abayon

According to a surprising new study, people who have more dental cavities are at lower risk of being diagnosed with head and neck cancer, compared with patients who have few or no cavities.

Dental cavities (or caries) are caused by tooth decay. This is when the bacteria present in the mouth make lactic acids that strip away minerals in the tooth by fermenting carbohydrates.

According to the researchers from the University at Buffalo, NY, previous studies have shown the bacteria that causes tooth decay is linked to an immune response, which may be protective against cancer.

For this study, published online in JAMA Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the researchers set out to determine if there is a significant link between dental cavities and Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC).

The study involved 399 patients newly diagnosed with HNSCC, and 221 participants without the cancer who were all selected from the Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Prosthetics at Roswell Park Cancer Industry between 1999 and 2007.

The researchers analyzed the dental history of all patients, particularly their history of dental cavities, by measuring the number of decayed, missing and filled teeth.

Episodic migraines linked to obesity

 Posted by Neill Abayon

People who have the occasional migraine are more likely to suffer from obesity, compared with those who do not have migraines, according to a study published in the journal Neurology.

Previous studies have demonstrated a link between people with chronic migraines and obesity, the researchers say. But they add that the research has been conflicting on whether the link is relevant to people who have less frequent migraine attacks.

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, conducted a study of 3,862 people whose average age was 47.

All participants were required to complete surveys disclosing information on their height, weight and migraine regularity.

Of the participants, 1,044 were obese, while 188 suffered from occasional or episodic migraines - defined as having fewer than 14 migraines every month.

Results of the analysis showed that participants who were obese were 81% more likely to have episodic migraine of any frequency, compared with people of normal weight.

The research also showed that those under the age of 50 who were obese were 86% more likely to suffer from episodic migraine, and this risk did not increase in those over the age of 50.

Additionally, the risk of episodic migraine increased in women who were obese but not men.

The researchers say that while this may indicate that the link between migraine and obesity is absent in men, it more likely suggests that the relationship between obesity and migraine is stronger in women. They add that further research is needed to determine if this is the case.

Common Safety Mistakes That Can Cause Foodborne Illness

 By Neill Abayon

  • Tasting food to see if it’s spoiled — you can’t taste, smell, or see bacteria that cause food poisoning.

  • Putting cooked meat on a plate that previously held raw meat — germs from the raw meat will transfer to the cooked meat.

  • Thawing food on the counter — germs multiply faster at room temperature.

  • Letting food cool before refrigerating it — it only takes an hour or two for bacteria to multiply.

  • Eating raw cookie dough or other foods containing uncooked eggs — uncooked eggs can contain Salmonella or other harmful bacteria.

  • Marinating meat, poultry, or seafood on the counter — again, room temperature is ideal for growing bacteria.

  • Transferring raw meat or poultry marinade onto cooked foods — bacteria from the raw meat will contaminate the cooked food.

  • Undercooking meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs.

  • Not washing your hands often enough during food preparation.
The impostant thing is, washing your hands and keeping your kitchen clean are important — but cooking poultry to 165 degrees is the best way to kill bacteria and avoid foodborne illness.

Not-So-Safe Foods You Should Avoid

Dr. Mercola

Some foods have been promoted as “healthy,” when they’re exactly the opposite. Clean Plates founder Jared Koch shared nine examples.  Here’s an expansion on his observations:

1.  Canned Tomatoes Many canned foods contain BPA, a toxic chemical linked to reproductive and neurological abnormalities, such as breast and prostate cancers, diabetes and heart disease. High acidity in tomatoes causes BPA to leach into your food. Consumer Reports‘ testing noted that only a few servings per day exceeds safety limits for children. To avoid this, don’t purchase canned foods. Stick to fresh fruits and vegetables or buy only glass containers, especially for acidic foods like tomatoes.

2.  Processed Meats A 2011 review of more than 7,000 clinical studies, commissioned by The World Cancer Research Fund examined the connection between diet and cancer confirmed previous findings that processed meats like ham and salami increase colorectal, stomach and pancreatic cancers. Processed meats should be avoided entirely because they’re typically made from animals injected with growth hormones, antibiotics and sodium nitrite, which can convert into cancer-causing nitrosamines. Other cancer-promoting chemicals proliferate when cooked at high temperatures, such as:

  • Heterocyclic Amines (HCAs), associated with increased stomach, colon and breast cancer risk;
  • Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), toxins formed when meats are  smoke-cured or grilled as fat drips onto the heat source;
  • Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), formed by pasteurization and sterilization, building slowly in your body and promoting oxidative stress, inflammation and increased disease risk.

20 Health Benefits of Rosemary

 Posted by Neill Abayon

The vast majority of us understand that rosemary is really an herb that is frequently used to provide a Mediterranean scent to various foods. But are you aware of the fact that the health benefits of rosemary are far greater than what most people know? Continue reading if you’d like to learn why you should incorporate this herb in your life.
Rosemary is an herb that may be seen growing in many gardens. It’s typically recognized by its little nettle-looking leaves. It’s a bushy plant and flourishes in soil with moderate exposure to sun. In the event that you don’t have or want to have an outdoor garden, you can still grow a beautiful rosemary plant inside by making it a potted plant.

20 Reasons You Should Make Use of Rosemary

1) Cancer Prevention
Rosemary contains carnosol, which is seen in studies as a powerful anticancer compound. In recent studies it has been shown to have some great results against a wide variety of cancers.
2) Enhanced Memory
Rosemary has been considered to possess memory-improving qualities. Now, studies have found that rosemary has a diterpine known as carnosic acid, which has neuroprotective properties that scientists think might protect against Alzheimer disease. This also includes the ordinary memory loss that occurs when one ages. Remarkably, even the scent of rosemary can serve to enhance memory.
3) Mood Elevator
The exact same study that found that smelling rosemary improved the subjects’ quality of memory also found that their mood was substantially improved compared to the control group.
4) Migraine Aid
Rosemary is a popular natural migraine treatment, and has been used as such for centuries. One way to make use of this for migraines is to boil water with rosemary and to breath in the steam. Typically, you’ll want to boil the water first, then place it into a large bowl and breath it in with a towel over your head and the bowl.
5) Helps with Pain
It not only helps alleviate the pain of migraines, but it has also been seen to work as an all-natural remedy for sore muscles, arthritis, and other joint and muscle pains. Typically you’ll use essential oil of rosemary for a lot of these, and you’ll use it topically.

3 Shocking Things That Could Be Floating in Your Milk

By Beth Buczynski

Milk, it does a body good, right? That’s what the dairy industry has been telling us for years, but there are a lot of good reasons to view this sweeping statement as propaganda.

Most recently, a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that drinking milk could expose your body to chemicals you never bargained for. Conducted by a team of Spanish and Moroccan researchers at the University of Jaen, the study discovered that there could be up to 20 painkillers, antibiotics and growth hormones in a single glass of milk.

Surprisingly, the study wasn’t meant to point out a horrifying lack of quality control in our milk supply. Rather, it was designed to test a new technology that combines continuous solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the detection of contaminants in any product. Unfortunately for the dairy industry, it worked all too well.

“The scientists analyzed 20 samples of milk—cow’s, goat’s, and human—bought in Spain and Morocco, and found a chemical cocktail of ingredients added to the animal’s diet prior to milking or contamination through feed or on the farm,” reports Truth Theory. Some of the contaminants found in trace amounts include triclosan (an anti-fungal), 17-beta-estradiol (a sex hormone), and florfenicol (an antibiotic).”

While trace amounts of the chemicals were found in all milk samples tested, cow’s milk was the most contaminated by far. This should be expected, however, as dairy cows are routinely given antibiotics, growth hormones and fed questionable GMO-ridden feed. If you buy cheap milk from conventional supermarkets or “food” warehouses like Wal-Mart, you are most certainly passing these toxic ingredients on to yourself and your family.

Although the researchers claim that the chemicals occur in amounts too low to be of concern for humans, it’s probably not a good idea to take their word for it.

If you’d like to continue to consume milk but would rather not have it infused with painkillers, antibiotics, and growth hormones, here are some tips:

1. Choose unpasturized, grassfed raw milk from a trusted, local farm.
2. Choose organic milk from a trusted brand. By law, certified organic milk must be free of antibiotics, growth hormones and GMOs.
3. Choose non-dairy milk. Nearly every soy-bean in the world is genetically modified, so soy milk is out, but alternatives like almond and hemp milk are usually safe, especially if you make it yourself.

Nature's Remedies

 Posted by Neill Abayon

In several studies, Sinupret has been compared to established mucokinetic drugs, including acetylcysteine and ambroxol (derived from the Ayuverdic herb, vasaka) for patients with acute bronchitis. Similar clinical benefits were shown, and there was equivalent improvement in mucociliary clearance In an observational study involving over 300 centers, 3187 patients with acute bronchitis or exacerbations of chronic bronchitis were evaluated. Similar symptomatic benefits were reported with Sinupret as were seen with the standard mucokinetic drugs.

These studies did not evaluate elderberry separately, and those for bronchitis did not evaluate Sinupret against a placebo. Since the beneficial effects of allopathic expectorants and mucolytics have not been adequately demonstrated, Sinupret and elder flowers cannot be regarded as having objectively proved their value.

Using a standardized black elderberry extract (Sambucol), a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 40 Israeli subjects was carried out during an influenza outbreak. Symptoms and fever improved significantly within 2 days in 93.3% of subjects in the treatment group, whereas the same degree of improvement was achieved by 91.7% of the controls at 6 days (P < 0.001). The preparation was also reported to increase hemagglutination inhibition titers to infuenza B, and to inhibit replication of strains of influenza A and . Although this surprisingly successful outcome has led to the promotion of Sambucol for influenza, the study has yet to be replicated.

Adverse Effects:

There are no recognized adverse effects, although data is limited. It is suggested that a diuretic effect may result in hYPokalemia, but this has not been objectively reported or studied.

Side Effects and Interactions:

There are no recognized drug interactions.

Cautions:

The stems, roots, unripe berries, and seeds may contain cyanide, and could cause vomiting and severe diarrhea if chewed or eaten uncooked. Ripe berries are safe when prepared for use in foods.

Preparations & Doses:

The flower preparations are usually administered as teas and alcoholic extracts, and are often found in composite herbal remedies. The traditional dose is 3-5 g of the flower, and this is typically administered 2-3 times a day. Topical cosmetic preparations are used for the skin and eyes. Sinupret contains 18 mg of powdered elder flower extract per dose in combination with other herbs, and Sambucol (a standardized elderberry extract) is marketed in the U.S. by both J.B. Harris and Nature's Way.
