Apali (Dioscorea esculenta)

Root crops from one of our climbers. "Apali" as it is called commonly here. Not so popular as potato, sweet potato or yam but Apali is a lesser yam (Dioscorea esculenta) with a great potential. This is a slender, slightly hairy and spiny vine. This is native to Southeast Asia and is one of the first yam species that was cultivated, also known as "Tugi" among the Tagalog. It is a climate-resilient crop that can withstand adverse climatic conditions, particularly during long dry periods. It is high in dietary fiber, has longer shelf-life and can be an alternative staple food source that can address food security issue in the country. Due to its potato-like characteristics, Apali can be processed into jams, ice cream, candies or as vegetabe mixed or stewed with meat. This species is a must have in every food forest. 😍🌱🌱❤️
