Big breakfast healthier than a big dinner

Posted by Neill Abayon

Researchers have found that eating a big breakfast of 700 calories promotes weight loss and reduces risks for diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol.

The study, recently published in Obesitycomes from Tel Aviv University, where Prof. Daniela Jakubowicz and colleagues studied the impact of different caloric intake at varying times of day. What they found is that the time of day we eat has a significant impact on how our bodies process food.
To study how this timing affects our bodies, the team put 93 obese women into two different groups:
  • "Big breakfast group" - consumed 700 calories at breakfast, 500 at lunch and 200 at dinner
  • "Big dinner group" - consumed 200 calories at breakfast, 500 at lunch and 700 at dinner.

Breakfast linked to 'healthy heart'

Could a bowl of cereal help your heart?
Posted by Neill Abayon

People should eat breakfast to keep their hearts in good condition, according to researchers in the US.

Their study of 27,000 men, in the journal Circulation, showed those skipping breakfast were at a greater risk of heart problems.
The team at the Harvard School of Public Health said missing the meal put an "extra strain" on the body.
The British Heart Foundation said breakfast helped people resist sugary snacks before lunch.
The men, aged 45-82, were studied for 16 years. During that time there were more than 1,500 heart attacks or cases of fatal heart failure.
However, people who skipped breakfast were 27% more likely to have heart problems than those who started the day with a meal. The researchers adjusted for other lifestyle risk factors such as smoking and exercise.

BREASKFAST IS BETTER

Written by Neill Abayon

Your mom always said breakfast was the most important meal of the day. But there are grown-up benefits to breakfast too. A new report compares breakfast eaters with breakfast skippers and finds that breakfast eaters:

* Take in significant less fat over the course of an average day.

* Have more fiber in their diets.

* Consume a more nutrient-rich diet, especially if they consume a fortified cereal.

* Tend to be leaner than breakfast skippers, in contrast to the common belief that foregoing breakfast is a good way to lose weight.
