Lack of sleep leads to increased food purchasing

Posted by Neill Abayon

It can sometimes be difficult to resist buying tasty candy and snacks while doing the weekly grocery shopping. But according to new research, a bad night's sleep could make the temptation even harder and lead to increased food purchasing.

The study, published in the journal Obesity, analyzed whether sleep deprivation would impair or alter an individual's shopping habits, based on the hypothesis that sleep deprivation can decrease higher-level thinking and increase hunger.
"We chose total sleep deprivation (TSD) to investigate the influence of sleep loss on food purchasing behavior in humans," say the study authors. "Our findings are broadly significant for people working in a variety of professions, including shift workers, cab drivers, nurses, doctors, and other jobs requiring work at night."
The researchers recruited 14 men of normal, healthy weight for their research. At the baseline of the study, all participants enrolled were confirmed to have normal sleep-wake rhythms.

Poor Sleep Is Associated With Lower Relationship Satisfaction In Both Women And Men

Posted by Neill Abayon

A bidirectional association exists between couples' sleep quality and the quality of their relationship, according to a research abstract that will be presented on Wednesday, June 10, at SLEEP 2009, the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.
Results indicate that on a day to day basis, couples' relationship quality affects their sleep, and their sleep also affects their subsequent relationship functioning. For men, better sleep (as indicated by diary–based sleep efficiency) was associated with more positive ratings of relationship quality the next day. For women, negative partner interactions during the day were associated with poorer sleep efficiency for both themselves and their partner that night.

Simple Way to Make Your Heart Healthier

Posted by Neill Abayon

There's evidence that not getting enough sleep can have serious consequences. Researchers have found that a lack of sleep can promote calcium buildup in the heart arteries, leading to the plaques that can then break apart and cause heart attacks and strokes.

Researchers have documented for the first time exactly how much of a risk shortened shut-eye can be. One hour less of sleep each night, on average, can increase coronary calcium by 16 percent. Among a group of almost 500 men and women, 27 percent of those getting less than five hours of sleep each night showed plaque in their heart vessels. Only 11 percent of those sleeping five to seven hours did, and mere 6 percent of subjects sleeping more than seven hours each night showed such atherosclerosis.

While the connection between sleep and heart disease is of growing interest to researchers, earlier studies had been inconclusive, in part because most of the trials relied on people's self-reported accounts of their sleeping habits. The new study aimed to record as accurately as possible the amount of sleep that the subjects got each night. Each volunteer wore a wrist monitor that measured and recorded activity at 30 second intervals.
