20 Health Benefits of Rosemary

 Posted by Neill Abayon

The vast majority of us understand that rosemary is really an herb that is frequently used to provide a Mediterranean scent to various foods. But are you aware of the fact that the health benefits of rosemary are far greater than what most people know? Continue reading if you’d like to learn why you should incorporate this herb in your life.
Rosemary is an herb that may be seen growing in many gardens. It’s typically recognized by its little nettle-looking leaves. It’s a bushy plant and flourishes in soil with moderate exposure to sun. In the event that you don’t have or want to have an outdoor garden, you can still grow a beautiful rosemary plant inside by making it a potted plant.

20 Reasons You Should Make Use of Rosemary

1) Cancer Prevention
Rosemary contains carnosol, which is seen in studies as a powerful anticancer compound. In recent studies it has been shown to have some great results against a wide variety of cancers.
2) Enhanced Memory
Rosemary has been considered to possess memory-improving qualities. Now, studies have found that rosemary has a diterpine known as carnosic acid, which has neuroprotective properties that scientists think might protect against Alzheimer disease. This also includes the ordinary memory loss that occurs when one ages. Remarkably, even the scent of rosemary can serve to enhance memory.
3) Mood Elevator
The exact same study that found that smelling rosemary improved the subjects’ quality of memory also found that their mood was substantially improved compared to the control group.
4) Migraine Aid
Rosemary is a popular natural migraine treatment, and has been used as such for centuries. One way to make use of this for migraines is to boil water with rosemary and to breath in the steam. Typically, you’ll want to boil the water first, then place it into a large bowl and breath it in with a towel over your head and the bowl.
5) Helps with Pain
It not only helps alleviate the pain of migraines, but it has also been seen to work as an all-natural remedy for sore muscles, arthritis, and other joint and muscle pains. Typically you’ll use essential oil of rosemary for a lot of these, and you’ll use it topically.

3 Shocking Things That Could Be Floating in Your Milk

By Beth Buczynski

Milk, it does a body good, right? That’s what the dairy industry has been telling us for years, but there are a lot of good reasons to view this sweeping statement as propaganda.

Most recently, a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that drinking milk could expose your body to chemicals you never bargained for. Conducted by a team of Spanish and Moroccan researchers at the University of Jaen, the study discovered that there could be up to 20 painkillers, antibiotics and growth hormones in a single glass of milk.

Surprisingly, the study wasn’t meant to point out a horrifying lack of quality control in our milk supply. Rather, it was designed to test a new technology that combines continuous solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the detection of contaminants in any product. Unfortunately for the dairy industry, it worked all too well.

“The scientists analyzed 20 samples of milk—cow’s, goat’s, and human—bought in Spain and Morocco, and found a chemical cocktail of ingredients added to the animal’s diet prior to milking or contamination through feed or on the farm,” reports Truth Theory. Some of the contaminants found in trace amounts include triclosan (an anti-fungal), 17-beta-estradiol (a sex hormone), and florfenicol (an antibiotic).”

While trace amounts of the chemicals were found in all milk samples tested, cow’s milk was the most contaminated by far. This should be expected, however, as dairy cows are routinely given antibiotics, growth hormones and fed questionable GMO-ridden feed. If you buy cheap milk from conventional supermarkets or “food” warehouses like Wal-Mart, you are most certainly passing these toxic ingredients on to yourself and your family.

Although the researchers claim that the chemicals occur in amounts too low to be of concern for humans, it’s probably not a good idea to take their word for it.

If you’d like to continue to consume milk but would rather not have it infused with painkillers, antibiotics, and growth hormones, here are some tips:

1. Choose unpasturized, grassfed raw milk from a trusted, local farm.
2. Choose organic milk from a trusted brand. By law, certified organic milk must be free of antibiotics, growth hormones and GMOs.
3. Choose non-dairy milk. Nearly every soy-bean in the world is genetically modified, so soy milk is out, but alternatives like almond and hemp milk are usually safe, especially if you make it yourself.

Nature's Remedies

 Posted by Neill Abayon

In several studies, Sinupret has been compared to established mucokinetic drugs, including acetylcysteine and ambroxol (derived from the Ayuverdic herb, vasaka) for patients with acute bronchitis. Similar clinical benefits were shown, and there was equivalent improvement in mucociliary clearance In an observational study involving over 300 centers, 3187 patients with acute bronchitis or exacerbations of chronic bronchitis were evaluated. Similar symptomatic benefits were reported with Sinupret as were seen with the standard mucokinetic drugs.

These studies did not evaluate elderberry separately, and those for bronchitis did not evaluate Sinupret against a placebo. Since the beneficial effects of allopathic expectorants and mucolytics have not been adequately demonstrated, Sinupret and elder flowers cannot be regarded as having objectively proved their value.

Using a standardized black elderberry extract (Sambucol), a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 40 Israeli subjects was carried out during an influenza outbreak. Symptoms and fever improved significantly within 2 days in 93.3% of subjects in the treatment group, whereas the same degree of improvement was achieved by 91.7% of the controls at 6 days (P < 0.001). The preparation was also reported to increase hemagglutination inhibition titers to infuenza B, and to inhibit replication of strains of influenza A and . Although this surprisingly successful outcome has led to the promotion of Sambucol for influenza, the study has yet to be replicated.

Adverse Effects:

There are no recognized adverse effects, although data is limited. It is suggested that a diuretic effect may result in hYPokalemia, but this has not been objectively reported or studied.

Side Effects and Interactions:

There are no recognized drug interactions.

Cautions:

The stems, roots, unripe berries, and seeds may contain cyanide, and could cause vomiting and severe diarrhea if chewed or eaten uncooked. Ripe berries are safe when prepared for use in foods.

Preparations & Doses:

The flower preparations are usually administered as teas and alcoholic extracts, and are often found in composite herbal remedies. The traditional dose is 3-5 g of the flower, and this is typically administered 2-3 times a day. Topical cosmetic preparations are used for the skin and eyes. Sinupret contains 18 mg of powdered elder flower extract per dose in combination with other herbs, and Sambucol (a standardized elderberry extract) is marketed in the U.S. by both J.B. Harris and Nature's Way.

Free Radicals and Nutrition

Emailed to me by  Alexander Holt

Free radicals can pose a major threat to our health because they have the potential to damage our body at the cellular level. But what exactly is a free radical?

A free radical is an atom or molecule which contains an unpaired electron. Since electrons have a very strong tendency to exist in a paired state, free radicals try to steal electrons from other atoms and molecules. The danger they pose comes when they react with important cellular components in our body.

Free radicals usually steal from the nearest stable molecule, taking its electron. When the attacked molecule loses its electron, it becomes a free radical itself (because now it is missing an electron), which starts a chain reaction. One free radical starts a cascade of new free radicals in our body, finally resulting in the disruption of the living cell.

Free radicals are generated naturally in the body as a normal part of biochemical processes like breathing and digesting. Sometimes the body's immune system creates free radicals in order to neutralize viruses and bacteria. While free radicals are not all bad, too many of them can lead to a number of problems.

An excess of free radicals can be caused by smoking, sunbathing, fried food, infections, excessive exercise, stress, smog and other environmental pollutants, harmful chemicals, toxins, radiation, etc.

Excess free radicals are a problem because their damage can cause premature aging, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome and a host of other conditions. The type of disease that occurs is dependent upon which of the free radical defenses in the body were not functioning properly and where the free radical attacks occur.

To protect us against the harmful impact of free radicals, our bodies utilize antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before any damage is done. Antioxidants donate an electron to the free radical and convert it to a harmless molecule.

Fresh fruits, vegetables and grains are all good sources of natural antioxidants, but you can choose to take a supplement as well. Fruits and veggies that are rich in antioxidants are sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, papaya, turnip, spinach, strawberries, kiwi, cranberries, plums, broccoli, red and green peppers, tomatoes, etc. Different antioxidants work in different areas of the body, so the key is to eat as wide a range of antioxidants as possible.

There are many different types of antioxidants such as enzymes, co-enzymes, vitamins and sulfur containing compounds. The most important antioxidant supplements are vitamin E, Vitamin C, Beta-carotene and Selenium. All are required for optimum health and illness prevention, however, our bodies can not manufacture them so they must be supplied through proper nutrition
and supplementation.

Antioxidant compounds must be constantly replenished since they are used up in the process of neutralizing free radicals.

Fish oil could prevent alcohol-related dementia

Posted by Neill Abayon

Omega-3 fish oil could help protect against alcohol-related dementia, according to a study presented at the 14th Congress of the European Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism in Warsaw, Poland.

The study, conducted by researchers from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, analyzed the brain cells of rats who had been exposed to large quantities of alcohol.

In a previous study carried out by the same research team, it was discovered that moderate social drinking, defined as two alcoholic drinks a day for men and one for women, could reduce the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia.

The research showed that small amounts of alcohol could improve the fitness of brain cells, by "toughening them up" to cope with stress later in life that could lead to dementia. However, high amounts of alcohol were found to "overwhelm" the cells, leading to inflammation and cell death.

According to the Alzheimer's Society, alcohol-related dementia - often referred to as Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome, is diagnosed in about 1 in 8 people with alcoholism. Studies have shown that the condition is most common in men between the ages of 45 and 65 with a long history of alcohol misuse.

For this most recent study, the researchers assessed adult rat brain cells that had been exposed to large quantities of alcohol - the equivalent to a human being four times over the legal alcohol limit for driving.

Chlamydia, Gonorrhea Tied to Higher Risk of Pregnancy Complications

By Robert Preidt

Women with chlamydia or gonorrhea infections before or during pregnancy are at increased risk for pregnancy complications such as stillbirth and premature birth, a new study suggests.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 350,000 Australian women who had their first child between 1999 and 2008. Of those women, 1 percent had at least one chlamydia infection before they gave birth, and 81 percent of those women were diagnosed before they became pregnant.
The study also found that 0.6 percent of the women had a gonorrhea infection before they gave birth, and nearly 85 percent of those women were diagnosed before they became pregnant. Half of the women diagnosed with gonorrhea had also previously been infected with chlamydia, found researchers Dr. Bette Liu, at the University of New South Wales, and colleagues.
Among all the women in the study, 4 percent had an unplanned premature birth, 12 percent had babies who were small for their gestational age, and 0.6 percent had stillborn babies.
After taking into account factors known to increase the risk of birth complications -- including age, poverty, smoking and health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure -- the researchers found that a prior infection with either chlamydia or gonorrhea also increased the risk.
Women who'd had chlamydia were 17 percent more likely to have an unplanned premature birth and 40 percent more likely to have a stillborn baby. There was no increased risk of having a baby that was small for its gestational age.

With Insomnia, Mind May Also Wander During Day

By Mary Elizabeth Dallas

People with insomnia have trouble concentrating during the day because the "wandering mind" areas of their brains may not be turned off, according to a new study.
Using brain imaging technology, researchers found that people with insomnia who were performing a working memory task did not rely less on the "default mode" regions of their brain that are usually active only when the mind is wandering.
The findings might help explain why insomniacs do not function as efficiently during the day, and could also lead to improved treatments for the sleep disorder, according to the authors of the study published in the September issue of the journal Sleep.
"We found that insomnia subjects did not properly turn on brain regions critical to a working memory task and did not turn off 'mind-wandering' brain regions irrelevant to the task," study lead author Sean Drummond said in a journal news release. "Based on these results, it is not surprising that someone with insomnia would feel like they are working harder to do the same job as a healthy sleeper."
Drummond is an associate professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, and the VA San Diego Healthcare System, as well as the secretary/treasurer of the Sleep Research Society.

Skipping meds linked to more hospital visits for kids

By Kathryn Doyle
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Kids and teens with asthma and type 1 diabetes often don't take their medication as prescribed, and those that skip doses are more likely to end up in the emergency room, according to a new review.
More than half of children with a chronic illness are put on medication, but past studies have found anywhere from 50 percent to 88 percent don't take their drugs as prescribed.
"In our experience, most patients and families are surprised to learn how prevalent this problem is, and many clinicians are as well," lead author Meghan McGrady of the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, said.
She and co-author Kevin Hommel set out to gauge the long-term healthcare utilization consequences of children with chronic illnesses not taking their medicine.
Their review included 10 past studies, nine of which found a link between skipping medication and more hospital visits.
Nine of the studies included children with asthma and the tenth focused on those with type 1 diabetes. Most studies looked at kids between two and 18 years old; one included young adults up to age 29.
Studies tracked children's medication use through pharmacy refill records, family questionnaires and electronic monitors.
On average, kids with asthma whose families did not fill any of their prescriptions were more likely to go to the ER than children with at least one filled prescription. Likewise, those who rarely refilled their drugs had more ER trips than children who got at least half of their prescribed refills.

Lack of sleep leads to increased food purchasing

Posted by Neill Abayon

It can sometimes be difficult to resist buying tasty candy and snacks while doing the weekly grocery shopping. But according to new research, a bad night's sleep could make the temptation even harder and lead to increased food purchasing.

The study, published in the journal Obesity, analyzed whether sleep deprivation would impair or alter an individual's shopping habits, based on the hypothesis that sleep deprivation can decrease higher-level thinking and increase hunger.
"We chose total sleep deprivation (TSD) to investigate the influence of sleep loss on food purchasing behavior in humans," say the study authors. "Our findings are broadly significant for people working in a variety of professions, including shift workers, cab drivers, nurses, doctors, and other jobs requiring work at night."
The researchers recruited 14 men of normal, healthy weight for their research. At the baseline of the study, all participants enrolled were confirmed to have normal sleep-wake rhythms.

Dishonest deeds lead to 'cheater's high,' study shows

The study revealed that those who cheated on the test were happy rather than remorseful.

Posted by Neill Abayon

Most of us would hopefully not consider cheating, particularly in serious situations. The feeling of guilt would overcome us. Or would it? New research suggests that cheaters are more likely to feel upbeat than remorseful following a dishonest deed.

Researchers from the University of Washington, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania and London Business School conducted a study that analyzed people's emotions following the act of an "unethical" deed.
The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, involved more than 1,000 participants from England and the US. Around 400 were from the general public aged between late 20s and early 30s, while the remaining participants were in their 20s and attending university.
The participants were required to carry out a series of six experiments, which involved a variety of tests and puzzles. Before and after all experiments, the subjects were asked to complete questionnaires regarding their emotions.

Anti-Ageing Diet Plan To Age Slowly But Gracefully

Emailed to me by Rebecca Appleton

Dr. Maiysha Clairborne Lists Her Top Five Foods For Those Who Want To Slow Down The Ageing Process

In this modern day and age, it seems as though everyone is coping with growing older by trying to look younger. With plastic surgery, hair transplants and Botox readily available, it’s no wonder that so many are resorting to drastic measures to maintain youth and vigor, but it is possible to slow down the ageing process without such invasive or costly extremes. Wellness specialist Dr. Maiysha Clairborne suggests that that by simply changing some food habits, it can be easy to feel and look younger.

There are so many great edible tricks to help age slowly and gracefully. Berries, for example, are packed with antioxidants, and these powerful antioxidants tackle the ageing process by preventing a buildup of toxins in the body. Blueberries are an example of a particularly effective berry, but any type will be beneficial. What’s more is that they taste great, are extremely healthy and very versatile. Mixed berry smoothie to kick start the day, anyone?

Whole grains are also amazing when it comes to anti-ageing, providing the body with tons of iron and B vitamins that it so drastically needs. Full of fiber, whole grains can lower the chance of developing type 2 diabetes, and can also help keep blood vessels healthy. Whole grains include brown rice, oatmeal and even brown pasta, meaning that it doesn’t have to live up to its ‘rabbit food’ stereotype. Aim for three servings a day, and these foods can help the body feel fresher and look younger.

Experts at Mind Body Spirit Wellness Center, a Georgia-based clinic specializing in alternative wellbeing treatments, also suggest that nuts can be a great source of healthy youth, from almonds and pistachios to walnuts and pecans – you name it. Dr. Clairborne explains that unlike most foods, the fats found in nuts are among the healthiest and most beneficial to bodies.  Dr. Clairborne says, “There’s definitely a lot of unfair stigma surrounding nuts. This comes from people who believe that the fatty acids are unhealthy, but it’s just not true. In fact, the fats found in nuts are some of the best, and are essential for those wanting maintain that youthful glow.”
Similarly, green vegetables are crammed with goodness. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage and bok choy are particularly good at battling the nasty toxins that can lead to cancer and memory loss, as well as speed up the ageing process. Additionally, dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, collard and mustard greens are also great, and with all their fiber will clear the body of toxins and help skin appear perkier with fewer wrinkles.

The last one may come as a bit of a surprise, but is nonetheless very effective. Chocolate – yes ,that’s right – is also full of antioxidants that the human body needs. The trick here is to be selective, as many cheaper types will contain too much sugar and hydrogenated fats. Instead, opt for chocolate that of 60% cocoa content or more, as the higher the percentage, the more powerful the antioxidants. The high cocoa content not only helps lower blood pressure, it also encourages blood vessels to relax to as to keep them youthful and supple.

There are so many dietary tips and habits that can help the ageing process become slower and much more graceful. General practice, such as cutting down salt intake and drinking plenty of water, will always be essential in the anti-ageing process, but particular foods like green vegetables, nuts and even dark chocolate can also have a surprisingly impressive effect in the plight to look and feel young.
