Thunder Mountain Longhorn Pepper

I've been looking for this variety since 2020 and finally I have outplanted mine this year. This is the worlds longest pepper — Thunder Mountain Longhorn pepper. The heat is only about 20,000 to 40,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), was originally grown in the Leigongshan Mountains in China. 🌢️🌢️🌢️

Barbadine (Passiflora quadrangularis)

Grounded additional Barbadine (Passiflora quadrangularis) for the food forest. Last March we outplanted the first batch. The fruit tastes similar to passion fruit, but with a more delicate and less intense flavor profile. Great for digestion with its natural fiber content. Helps regulate blood pressure with its potassium boost. Immature fruits are used as a vegetable.

Still lots of seedlings available for interested takers. 😍🌱🌱❤️

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)

The only surviving specimen of my Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) which I successfully germinated from seeds 4 years ago. A year ago the other specimen I had died due to fungus. Hopefully this one will be okay judging from its physical appearance. Nutmeg is considered an expensive spice, and was once among the most expensive spice in Europe. 😍🌱🌳

Apali (Dioscorea esculenta)

Root crops from one of our climbers. "Apali" as it is called commonly here. Not so popular as potato, sweet potato or yam but Apali is a lesser yam (Dioscorea esculenta) with a great potential. This is a slender, slightly hairy and spiny vine. This is native to Southeast Asia and is one of the first yam species that was cultivated, also known as "Tugi" among the Tagalog. It is a climate-resilient crop that can withstand adverse climatic conditions, particularly during long dry periods. It is high in dietary fiber, has longer shelf-life and can be an alternative staple food source that can address food security issue in the country. Due to its potato-like characteristics, Apali can be processed into jams, ice cream, candies or as vegetabe mixed or stewed with meat. This species is a must have in every food forest. 😍🌱🌱❤️

Bamboo Ginger

My 2 year old Bamboo Ginger also known as "Luyang-itim" (Alpinia luteocarpa). This is part of my herbaceous layer. The herbaceous layer in a forest is a crucial level of vegetation, characterized by plants with non-woody stems, like grasses, forbs, and ferns. These plants are typically below one meter in height and play vital roles in the ecosystem, including nutrient cycling and providing food and habitat for wildlife. This is used in traditional Chinese medicine. 😍🌱🌱
