Early Weight Gain Leads to Hypertension

Posted by Neill Abayon

Babies who gain weight rapidly during the first few months of their lives may have an increased risk of developing high blood pressure as adults.

A new study tracked close to 700 young adults around the age of 25. It found that those who gained weight more rapidly in the first five months after birth, and again between the ages of 2 and 5, were more likely to have high systolic blood pressure, which is the pressure in your arteries while your heart contracts.

Immediate weight gain after birth also was linked to higher adult diastolic blood pressure, the pressure when your heart relaxes between beats.
